Fishing Lake Erie

I have had a lot of fun the last couple of weeks. Although I have caught fish the last seven trips out, Saturday morning I GOT SKUNKED. See Jason, (one of my readers just getting into the fishing game) it happens to everyone. I don’t know if I need to move away from my little favorite spot. Last I heard, rainbow fishing was slow Saturday morning but they were catching a few more 8-10 miles east of there. I may need to run east next trip but the location I have been fishing in my S.S. Minnow at 4.5 miles out was really handy. Stay tuned – lots of Wheatley rainbow fishing to come!

Fishing Walleye Lake Erie – Simple Rigs – Tom Henricks

Fishing Lake Erie for walleye does not need to be complicated when numbers of fish are available. A big boat is not necessary and I actually prefer a small boat when weather permits. I caught 5 beautiful walleye Saturday morning before noon, fishing near shore just a couple miles west of Leamington and I was in a small 15 foot aluminum by myself. It was agreat morning.
You can fish a simple bottom bouncer rig like the one in the photos here. (SORRY THE PHOTOS ARE NOT GREAT – but you get the idea) I don’t even fish live bait and have not for years now. Simple rubber worms work fine for me. I like a long leader (about 5-6 feet)
A base setup you can work from – run out about 50 feet of line, 4 ounces of lead, and speed of about 1.8 mph. This is going to have you fishing bottom in about 24 feet of water. To fish a different depth yu can vary the weight or line out. For a bottom bouncer rig, I would try not to run any faster than 1.8 mph.
Colors can vary. I show 2 great colors, the red, white and blue and another we call RDP. I personally prefer brass or copper backs, but also use white backs as well. These colors work well together in most water clarity and sky conditions. The RDP may perform better in cloudy conditiuons and murkier water while the red/white/blue may have an advantage in brighter conditions.
That’s all you need to get started catching walleye. Good Luck and Tight Lines!!
