Fishing Report Western Lake Erie May 5 2012
Walleye fishing from Colchester to Wheatley may be on the verge of breaking loose. I am hearing that some walleye are being caught west of Colchester near Holiday Beach. That usually starts the walleye fishing on the north shore.
No reports of walleye being caught out of Leamington or Wheatley yet. The Wheatley boat ramp is back in order and ready for use. Fishermen are catching perch out of Wheatley now.
I was very sorry to hear that Ken Snider who has been managing Wheatley Harbor has passed away. He was always friendly, remembered everyone by name and contributed tremendously to recreational fishing out of Wheatley. He will be missed by us and we can only hope they find someone like him to take over the duties.
U.S. waters – Bits and Pieces
Walleye fishing slowed over the past week (week of 4/23/12) as weather conditions limited fishing opportunities on the main lake. The best reports have come from trolling with crankbaits or worm harnesses around the outer buoys of the Camp Perry firing range and west of the Bass Islands. Fish are still being caught with jigs on the Camp Perry firing range reefs, but catch rates have slowed as the spawning season ends and walleye begin moving off the reefs.
Catawba State Park Friday April 4 – limit before noon dragging bright pink Deep Diver Reef Runners back 57 ft. off the Church Walleye boards on an almost flat lake. Started at “E” can and did a lazy mile and a half loop just to the north throwing in a few S turns. Two loops and I was done.
