Big Boyz Tournament Ends

Fishing Wheatley August 4 2014

The annual 10 day tournament has come to an end. It was an extremely unusual year. The temperatures never got real high and a good thermocline never developed. The fish were scattered all over the place and just didn’t layer up or gather in schools. The walleye were very large this year and a 30 inch walleye was not good enough to make the top ten.

One thing that I definitely do not like is the way the fish were measured. They went by length this year and it can be difficult to measure the length of a fish consistantly in sixteenths of a inch. I watched then struggle with measurements and several ties occurred. That would never happen when weighing with a quality scale. Apparently there has been a few issues with odd things being discovered in fish stomachs in prior years. Imagine that, someone cheating. Go figure.

I did not fish well personally and never boated a fish that was a consideration for the measuring team.  Both my boys caught big fish that were worthy of measurement and Tyler collected a little cash. We all broke off a few large fish that are cause for wondering how big they were. Well, time to think about next year now!

Big Boys Fishing Tournament is On

The fishing out of Wheatley is really spotty with some guys reporting good catches of walleye and a few rainbow. Although it was a very choppy day, I boated 5 walleye and a rainbow and lost a couple walleye near the boat, busted off one hot fish and had a swivel fail that released another fish. Wednesday is going to be fix all tackle, line and leaders day.

I hit on a little location and pattern that seemed to be working well for me and I hope it holds for my next trip. Wednesday weather is too iffy for me and I can’t exactly determine what Thursday is bringing in for weather yet. It looks like there is still a shot at catching a board fish for the Big Boyz Tournament. We will see!

Wheatley Fishing Tough

Wheatley Fishing Tournament Progress

Fishing out of Wheatley is really hit and miss right now. The first day of the tournament saw some extremely large fish measured in that set the bar for the tournament. One of the Wheatley charter boat regulars that was able to fish daily prior to the tournament and had a good idea where the big walleye were holding really put some big numbers on the board. He ran a couple big charters opening day and a big spread of lines in the water paid off. It is going to take a monster walleye to top the board now.

I have personally had the worst performance in 10 years and find myself very frustrated. The fish are in a completely different pattern from traditional and they seem high in the water. I am just not getting my baits (2 lines for me) located correctly and so I am not hooking up often and then I seem to be in a stretch of very bad luck with fish breaking offf or spitting the hook.

There is still some tournament time left but topping big walleye is a monumental task now and I am thinking that trying to boat a big rainbow must be a priority. Every year in the previous 10 years I have boated a bigger rainbow than the one leading right now. Do I think I can beat that this year? I need to break this streak of bad luck and bad fishing and get weather that will allow the SS Minnow to go where she needs to go. I can still get that big Bow!!

Wheatley Fishing Improving

Went out this morning and boated 3 of 4 rainbows and a pair of walleye. Things are finally starting to look OK for the coming tournament. Rainbows were actually caught in a wide range of depths today.

The only thing that really makes things a bit out of the norm, the fish are all very high in the water column. It makes fishing for them different from anything I have experienced in the past. I must trust the fishfinder and I must keep my baits higher than I have ever fished them in the past. I hope this changes. It just doesn’t feel right and I have a hard time sticking to the plan.

Oh well – at least we have fish for the tournament!

Wheatley Fishing Tough but Showing Signs

The fish are few and far between out of Wheatley Harbour but there are signs that things could liven up with the hot week ahead! Water temperatures are running 15-20 degrees colder on the surface than this time last year.
I fished the morning and boated a nice walleye and let a rainbow beat me right by the boat. There were reports of several multiple fisf rainbows caught. The reports are a little suspect as they were reportedly caught in the very area I was fishing. Nothing new in misleading fishing reports.

I didn’t see any boats actually catch a fish but it is good that some were boated anyway. I did not mark any fish deep yesterday and I actually hooked my bow on a long line that was fishing about 10 feet down.
Looks like we may have enough fish to make it interesting in the 10 day tournament that starts next weekend. I have this week to figure out the magic depth to fish and the bait color that is going to be hot this year.
