Well I remember posting quite some time ago that it appeared the rainbow fishing was setting up very nicely out of Wheatley. I would say that is turning out to be an under-statement. I went out again Saturday and took an older friend with me in the SS Minnow.

We had another great day and rainbows were there to be taken again. We really had a lot of fun and we had 21 fish on. As with that game we lost a bunch of them but we did manage to boat 9 rainbow trout and 5 walleye and most of the fish were big. I can’t ever remember the season going on so long and so consistent.

Nothing changed with my baits. As has been the case the whole season – I could have fished my 2 favorite colors of Yeck Spoons and my custon painted color that I call RDP. Yeck spoons are simply the best. Now I just need to convince them to paint my RDP and send me some “Black Demons” and my my lure dreams have all come true.

Fishing Wheatley Aug 20 2011

Well, the fishing is really hanging in there at Wheatley. Rainbow and walleye continue to be caught and should hang in until a severe weather change. My whole gang was out fishing saturday. My son Tyler had a good day and boated several rainbows and walleye. My other son Trevor had a great day as well. His trips have been limited this year but he certainly had a big day with the bows and eyes. My luck held on as has been the case this year. I limited out on rainbow and walleye and actually had to release a few bows while trying to fill my limit of eyes. My best color yesterday was the copper “Killer Bee” by Yeck Lures. It caught nearly all my fish. I can’t say enough about Yeck Lures. I could have taken 3 colors most days this year. One color that has been big is my custom painted purple/pink/white bait you will see in previous posts. The other 2 are copper variations by Yeck. There is one more color I need to get to complete the starters for me. I think the purple variation would have also caught me many fish this year and I will be adding some to my arsenal soon.

Although they seemed to have moved eastward, this fishery is great and you should get in while it lasts. It can actually end very quickly. No doubt we will get a cold, windy week later in August and that will be the signal to the fish to move on in there annual cycle. Once the water gets mixed up and temperatures start to cool in the upper layer, the fish will be gone as quick as they came.

Trout, Walleye Spoons

This year set up right from the start for a good year and I can’t remember a better year. I have been using a very simple setup. I run two number O dipsey divers out from 60 – 80 feet of line and the dipsey setting 3 on the bottom. I think I could have held to two colours for the whole season and I would have been fine. I love that “Jerry Lee” by “Yeck Lures”. That spoon is copper with orange tape. The other colour I could not live without is my custom painted RDP as seen in the photo. This spoon has been the most consistent spoon in my box for several years. I have painted a bunch of them. Year to year we have seen Northern King watermelon, monkey puke, greasy chicken wing, and orange crush but none of those seem to go from year to year. You can see my starting line-up but in all honesty, those other baits just haven’t stayed on very long.

Go fishing for rainbow trout and walleye at Wheatley before it all ends.

The walleye fishing in Wheatley has been phenomenal this week. I fished Wednesday and boated 8 walleye and fished Friday. On Friday I boated an unbelievable 21 walleye and 5 rainbows and was back at the dock by noon.

The fish are real nice and a real handfull to get in the net when fishing by yourself and trying to manhandle 6-7 pound fish with one hand and net with the other hand. Video tape of some of those net jobs would be very interesting.

Rainbow Walleye Wheatley July 22 2011

The big dipsy diver has been doing the damage at 60-70 feet out and occasionally I dropped back further. Copper spoon with orange tape, watermelon and my old favorite custom painted blue/pink/white as seen below are catching fish. I couldn’t keep the walleye off this morning to catch my rainbows.

Things are shaping up nicely for a great season of fishing in the Wheatley area. I was fishing out of Wheatley marina again on Wednesday with an older gentleman you will notice in an earlier post. We had a busy day and the fish are big. We ran out of cooler space actually. We boated 6 very nice rainbow trout and 5 large walleyes. We were fishing about 4-5 miles SE of the harbor and spent most of our time in 50 feet of water. Spoons colors were the same as previous post, with the purple/pink spoon doing almost all the damage. One spoon I painted last weekend had much of the paint scraped off from fish activity. Get in and have fun!

Walleye fishing is here on the north shore of lake Erie near Leamington. This nice box of fish was caught a few miles west of Leamington on Sunday. The largest was 27 inches long and there were a few JUMBO perch in the box as well. These fish were caught using bottom bouncers in 24 feet of water. About 3 ounces of lead and 1.8 mph with about 50 feet of line out.

There were reports that pink/purple combinations were catching fish as well.

In the pictures are my son Trevor Henricks and his 77 year old father-in-law, Ernie Grant. Ernie fishes more days each year than most charter fishermen and lives to go moose hunting in which he fully participates every year.

Fishing Report Leamington, Point Pelee, Pelee Island

Walleye fishing appears to be picking up steam and fish are moving closer to the north shore. Walleye have been caught on both west and east side of Pelee Island (mostly at the southern end) and some up at the NE corner. Some walleye are being caught in the Point Pelee and Colchester area as well.
I am waiting for better news and more specifics. I hope to have good news soon.
Yellow perch can be caught at Grub’s Reef also.

US Reports Western Basin

Walleye fishing is improving and has been best around West Sister Island, off of Niagara Reef, N of West Reef, E of North Bass Island on the Canadian border, and along the Canadian border E of Gull Island Shoal. Fish have been caught by trolling with divers and spoons, inline weights and worm harnesses, and crankbaits. Fish can also be caught by casting mayfly rigs or drifting with bottom bouncers and worm harnesses.

Yellow perch fishing has been best E of Ballast Island, E of the Kelleys Island airport, and S of Gull Island Shoal using minnows on perch spreaders fished near the bottom.
